(The teleconference connection to the International Space Station passes out of range.Right now, on board the International Space Station (ISS), there are four American astronauts, two Russians and one German. What would you tell them to - and share with them to encourage them to continue with their studies in a way that they would either one day be on the International Space Station or could be here on Earth working with these incredible professionals I’m around right now to facilitate the work you all are doing in space? What’s your advice for our students? What - I have - I’m going to have a bunch of students with me today. THE VICE PRESIDENT: And everything you spoke of is about life - isn’t it? - and what we can do through food, through the growth of agriculture that feeds the species and the population, but also what we can do to improve the condition of human life in terms of sickness and what we can do and discover in terms of treatment that really is so exciting. There are so many different aspects of what we do up here that can be applied to making Earth a better place. So, things like learning how to grow plants without soil and being able to use that back on Earth to help with food security thinking about - learning about how cells age - immune cells age while we’re up here and thinking about how we can help with immune cell aging back on Earth. ![]() You know, first, Madam Vice President, it’s an honor and privilege to be speaking with you today.īut yes, we are honored and privileged to be able to use the International Space Station as a testbed and as a laboratory to be able to learn lessons that we can apply to Earth. You do realize how fragile it is and how much we have to take care of it as well.Īnd so, it is just really a privilege to be up here and - and just really an honor. And it is great looking down on the Earth. So it is really phenomenal to be up here. So, our perspective up here is that we’re all part of one team, we all work towards one common purpose, and that when we set - set our minds towards - towards those kinds of goals, we can accomplish anything. We see - and we see and work with people that are, you know, from all different backgrounds and things like that. Though Ziegfeld anticipated opening his new theatre on Sixth Avenue with Show Boat, the epic nature of the work required an unusually long gestation period and extensive changes during out-of-town tryouts. Ziegfeld was impressed with the show and agreed to produce it, writing the next day, "This is the best musical comedy I have ever been fortunate to get a hold of I am thrilled to produce it, this show is the opportunity of my life." Show Boat, with its serious and dramatic nature, was considered an unusual choice for Ziegfeld, who was best known for revues such as the Ziegfeld Follies. After composing most of the first-act songs, Kern and Hammerstein auditioned their material for producer Florenz Ziegfeld, thinking that he was the person to create the elaborate production they felt necessary for Ferber's sprawling work. After being assured by Kern that he did not want to adapt it as the typical frivolous "girlie" show of the 1920s, she granted him and his collaborator Oscar Hammerstein II the rights to set her novel to music. įerber was at first shocked that anyone would want to adapt Show Boat as a musical. Woollcott introduced them that evening during the intermission of Kern's latest musical, Criss Cross. Jerome Kern was impressed by the novel and, hoping to adapt it as a musical, asked the critic Alexander Woollcott to introduce him to Ferber in October 1926. Ferber researched these American showboats for months prior to her stay on the Floating Palace Theatre. In a few weeks, she gained what she called a "treasure trove of show-boat material, human, touching, true". In doing research for her proposed novel Show Boat, writer Edna Ferber spent five days on the James Adams Floating Palace Theatre in Bath, North Carolina, gathering material about a disappearing American entertainment venue, the river showboat. 4 Principal roles and notable performers.Late 20th-century revivals of Show Boat have won both the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical (1995) and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival (1991). Awards did not exist for Broadway shows in 1927, when the show premiered, or in 1932 when its first revival was staged. ![]() The quality of Show Boat was recognized immediately by critics, and it is frequently revived. Now … came complete integration of song, humor and production numbers into a single and inextricable artistic entity. Now … the play was the thing, and everything else was subservient to that play. ![]() Here we come to a completely new genre – the musical play as distinguished from musical comedy. According to The Complete Book of Light Opera: It "was a radical departure in musical storytelling, marrying spectacle with seriousness", compared with the trivial and unrealistic operettas, light musical comedies and "Follies"-type musical revues that defined Broadway in the 1890s and early 20th century. The premiere of Show Boat on Broadway was an important event in the history of American musical theatre. The musical was first produced in 1927 by Florenz Ziegfeld. The musical contributed such classic songs as " Ol' Man River", " Make Believe", and " Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man". Its themes include racial prejudice and tragic, enduring love. ![]() The musical follows the lives of the performers, stagehands and dock workers on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, over 40 years from 1887 to 1927. It is based on Edna Ferber's best-selling 1926 novel of the same name. Show Boat is a musical with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Original 1927 sheet music for Ol' Man River, from Show Boat ![]() MacDonald still appeared in sketches on the show for a short while longer, but it was clear that he was on his way out. In his case, producer Don Ohlmeyer simply didn’t think he was funny, at least not as the anchor of “Weekend Update.” He was let go in the middle of the season, and replaced by Colin Quinn. Much like Jenny Slate, MacDonald dropped an f-bomb during a live show, but that probably wasn’t what got him fired. He would go on to have a long, successful career in comedy, with his lone year on SNL acting mostly as an historical footnote. Gottfried hadn’t developed his comedic personality yet, and during his lone season on SNL, he mostly just blended into the fabric. The whole thing was a catastrophic failure, with Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy being the only cast members who were brought back. had his breakout role in Less Than Zero, and while he was derailed by drug problems in the 90s, his 2008 comeback as Iron Man lead to him becoming one of America’s most beloved - and highest paid - stars.īefore he became the voice of the Aflac Duck, and his ultra-screechy voice found his way into or hearts, Gottfried was part of the disastrous 1980-81 season, which saw the show bring an entirely new cast, along with a new producer (Jean Doumanian). In the ill-fated 1985-86 season, a 20-year-old RDJ was part of one the least-loved casts ever (only three cast members were brought back the following year), which also included Joan Cusack, Randy Quaid, and Anthony Michael Hall. Yes, that’s right folks, Tony Stark was an SNL cast member. No wait, actually that would be pretty awesome. Let’s hope she can avoid swearing in her opening monologue. Based on Slate’s recent star turn, it wouldn’t be surprising if she came back to host SNL in the near future. She also co-stars in FX’s new comedy, Married. Last month, Slate’s film Obvious Child was met with rave reviews, with Slate in particularly being credited with giving a brilliant performance. Her short film Marcel The Shell With Shoes On became a phenomenon, leading to a book deal. Thankfully, she managed to recover nicely. While Slate remained on the cast for the rest of the season, she was quickly let go upon its completion. It’s hard to imagine having a worst first show than Slate did, when she dropped an f-bomb in the middle of a sketch. But at least the mistake was corrected, and he rightfully enjoyed a lengthy SNL career. ![]() He would manage to stay in the cast for another five years, creating memorable characters like Merv the Perv, and of course, co-starring in “Lazy Sunday.” Considering how beloved Parnell had become by the time his 2006 departure, it’s hard not to wonder why he was ever let go in the first place. Those who were wondering just what was going on were given an explanation in the season finale, when Parnell mentioned that Will Ferrell was responsible for Parnell’s re-hiring onto to the show. Midway through the season, he re-appeared. After the 2000-01 season, his third on the show, Parnell was let go. This might be the only firing that was actually discussed on the show by the person who was fired. Wayans was destined for fame, but like many others, SNL just wasn’t the right place for him. Of course, the incident hardly killed Wayans career he went on to become a star after breaking out on In Living Colour and starring in the movie Mo’ Money. As the legend goes, Michaels tore into him backstage, and fired him on the spot. In a sketch where Wayans was supposed to play a “straight man”-type cop, Wayans chose to play the character as extremely effeminate, distracting the audience, and leaving them wondering what the joke was supposed to be. This is one of the more memorable firings in SNL history, because not only did it happen in the middle of the season, it happened in the middle of an episode. ![]() He hosted the ESPY’s and currently has a gig on the Fox NFL Sunday pregame show. ![]() Luckily, he rebounded by earning a gig as a Daily Show correspondent where he made a much bigger name for himself. Sadly, this meant Riggle was given the boot before he could ever fully develop a voice on the show. The result was an unmemorable, directionless season which caused Lorne Michaels to make big changes the following summer. Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan, and Chris Kattan were all out the door, while Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Kristen Wiig had yet to arrive. Thats what happened with Riggle, who was stuck in the woefully awkward 2004-05 campaign. Sometimes, bad SNL seasons happen to good people. Here’s some other talented folks who were memorably let go from SNL. Luckily for Wheelan, he’s in pretty good company. Wheelan lasted just one year on the show, and while he had his moments, he never really managed to break out and establish himself as an essential part of the cast. Yesterday, Brooks Wheelan announced that he would not be returning to Saturday Night Live next season. ![]() ![]() HDR Projects OTOH has a ton of controls, plus loads of presets so you don't get bogged down trying to use all those controls, but when you're done you're no longer working with RAW images. dng RAW format, so you can continue to work with the maximum amount of data, but it doesn't do anything fancy - the only settings are for ghosting. If you've got RAW images, Adobe Lightroom is the only software that takes them & saves the result in their open. Software then 1st aligns, then combines the images. overexposed to capture more shadow detail, underexposed to get highlights that aren't blown out. To do HDR photography you take 2 or more photos with your camera at different exposure settings, e.g. You can see a couple of great examples here: photoshopcafecom/tutorials/HDR_ps/hdr-ps.htm The exception, where HDR photography can make a big difference, is when you're trying to capture an image of a scene with poor lighting that you either can't control, or where you want to use only natural lighting. Which in a nutshell is why there's all this hype in the 1st place, to convince you to spend your money. And since regular video & photos are pretty good at that all ready, the difference with UHD & HDR can be pretty subtle. And like all advertising hype, it's not necessarily accurate - 1) you can use the same sort of FX without the UHD or HDR parts, & 2), UHD & HDR really mean that you have more data to work with, so that you can show a wider gamut or more full range of colors, closer to what we see with our eyes. There's Lots of advertising hype promoting a more stylistic image, with exaggerated colors &/or FX, for both UHD video & HDR photography or images. If not, if you just want to create more dramatic images, HDR Projects is likely for you, whether you want to do HDR or not - it can apply its FX with or without the HDR part. Whether their HDR Projects is for you depends mostly on whether you're after realism or not. Keep up the great work!
